Texas GOP Rejects 2020 Election and Contends Biden Was ‘Not Legitimately Elected’

The Texas Republican Party adopted a new platform this weekend that rejects the results of the 2020 election and declares that President Joe Biden’s victory was not legitimate.

The changes were made during the state GOP’s biennial convention as Republican leaders contended the 2020 election violated the Constitution and resulted in substantial voter fraud. Party leaders argued that various secretaries of state nationwide had “illegally circumvented” state legislatures by “conducting their elections in multiple ways.”

“We reject the certified results of the 2020 Presidential election, and we hold that acting President Joseph Robinette Biden Jr. was not legitimately elected by the people of the United States,” the party wrote in its 40-page document. “We strongly urge all Republicans to work to ensure election integrity and to show up to vote in November of 2022, bring your friends and family, volunteer for your local Republicans, and overwhelm any possible fraud.”

Party officials argued the 2020 election was conducted fraudulently because there were no universal voting methods adopted by all 50 states and several legislatures allowed ballots to be received and counted if they were postmarked before Election Day. As a result, GOP leaders alleged this resulted in “substantial election fraud” that “significantly affected” election results in five key states that secured Biden’s victory.

Audits of the election in Texas requested by former President Donald Trump and approved by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott did not find widespread fraud, showing few discrepancies between the initial electronic count and hand recounts, noting it would not change the outcome. The audit examined nearly 3.9 million votes in four of the state’s largest counties.

The former president had pressed for the audit despite winning the state by 5 points, telling Abbott in September 2021 that “your citizens don’t trust the election system.”

Despite no evidence of substantial fraud, Trump has continued to press that the election was illegitimate. The issue is in the public spotlight this month as the House select committee investigating the Jan. 6 riot is holding hearings on whether those claims are responsible for the violence at the Capitol on that day.

Almost 40% of U.S. voters don’t believe Biden is the legitimate winner of the 2020 election, according to a poll from the Economist/YouGov.

The Texas Republican Party unveiled other newly adopted platform stances during its weekend convention, including a section that declared homosexuality “abnormal” and rejected “all efforts to validate transgender identity.”
