The suspect in the deadly New Year’s Day attack on Bourbon Street has been identified as 42-year-old Shamsud Din Jabbar, according to law enforcement sources confirmed by Fox 8 and the FBI.
Authorities report that Jabbar intentionally drove a pickup truck through barricades into a crowd of pedestrians near Canal Street early Wednesday morning. The vehicle, bearing a Texas license plate, was reportedly carrying an ISIS flag, along with a handgun, an AR-style rifle, and improvised explosive devices (IEDs). At least 10 people are dead and 35 are injured.
The FBI stated that the truck had previously crossed into the U.S. at Eagle Pass, Texas, in November. However, the individual who brought the vehicle across the border is not believed to be the same person responsible for the attack.
After crashing the vehicle, Jabbar allegedly exited and began firing at police officers, injuring two before being fatally shot by law enforcement. The attack resulted in 10 fatalities and at least 35 injuries. Federal investigators are treating the incident as an act of terrorism and continue to assess the potential threat posed by the explosives found.
The Pasadena Police Department is assisting in the ongoing investigation.
President-elect Donald Trump called the attack an “act of pure evil.”
“When I said that the criminals coming in are far worse than the criminals we have in our country, that statement was constantly refuted by Democrats and the Fake News Media, but it turned out to be true,” he said. “The crime rate in our country is at a level that nobody has ever seen before. Our hearts are with all of the innocent victims and their loved ones, including the brave officers of the New Orleans Police Department. The Trump Administration will fully support the City of New Orleans as they investigate and recover from this act of pure evil!”
