A new survey from the Ronald Reagan Institute reveals overwhelming support among Americans for strong national defense and global leadership, with 85% of respondents considering foreign policy and national security “somewhat” or “extremely” important. Conducted from November 8-14 with 2,500 participants, the poll highlights bipartisan agreement on the need for U.S. strength in a volatile world.
The survey shows growing concern about the threats posed by adversarial nations like China, Russia, Iran, and North Korea. A record-high number of Americans support an active U.S. role in international affairs, with a 15-point increase in those favoring global military engagement compared to last year. Among younger Americans under 30, support surged by 32 points, reflecting heightened awareness of global challenges.
China emerged as the primary perceived threat, though respondents identified Russia as the U.S.’s top enemy. Concerns over the cooperation between these nations and others, including Iran and North Korea, resonated with 85% of participants, particularly in light of their coordinated activities in Ukraine and the Middle East.
Confidence in U.S. military strength varied by gender. While 59% of men believe the U.S. could defeat China in a military conflict, only 45% of women shared this confidence. Against Russia, confidence was higher, with 73% of men and 56% of women believing in a U.S. victory. These differences underscore nuanced perceptions of the military’s readiness.
Despite strong support for national defense, Americans also prioritize domestic issues like healthcare, border security, and Social Security. However, the data shows that most Americans reject isolationism. Rachael Hoff, Policy Director at the Ronald Reagan Institute, noted, “Americans want their government to lead from a position of strength and defend freedom and democracy globally.”
The survey reflects a divergence from President-elect Donald Trump’s “America First” policy, which critics argue risks isolating the U.S. on the world stage. Still, bipartisan unity emerged on the importance of standing against global threats and ensuring a robust military to secure peace.
As geopolitical tensions rise, the survey reinforces Americans’ call for leadership grounded in strength and shared values.
