Stacey Abrams Compares Herself and Progressive Democrats to Ukrainians

Democratic gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams received heavy criticism after likening herself to President Zelenskyy and Ukraine.

QUICK FACTS:
  • While appearing on the “Daily Show” with Trevor Noah, Abrams said the war in Ukraine was simply about the “war on democracy,” Fox News reported.
  • “And if we ever doubted that: The war that Putin is waging against Ukraine, President Zelenskyy said it, and I’m going to paraphrase him, probably poorly,” she said. “He said this isn’t a war on Ukraine, this is a war on democracy in Ukraine.”
  • Abrams went on to say that it is wrong when democracy is overtaken by those “who want to choose who can be heard, and those choices are not based on anything other than animus or inconvenience.”
ABRAM’S CHALLENGER, GOVERNOR BRIAN KEMP’S CAMPAIGN PRESS SECRETARY:

“This is a disgusting comparison. President Zelenskyy and the Ukrainian people are fighting for their freedom against a callous invasion that has killed innocent civilians.”

BACKGROUND:
  • Critics didn’t hold back when responding to Abram’s comments, saying her reaction was “deeply offensive” and paled in comparison to what the Ukrainian people were actually facing.
  • “This is quite similar to what Al Sharpton did yesterday on Morning Joe,” Curtis Houck of NewsBusters tweeted. “That’s right — these so-called “voting rights activists” want you to think they’re just like the Ukrainian people in bomb shelters and fighting the Russian military.”
  • Abrams lost to Republican Gov. Brian Kemp in Georgia’s 2018 gubernatorial election and became a well-known name after she claimed the election was stolen from her.
