House Speaker Mike Johnson won his re-election bid in Louisiana’s 4th Congressional District, The Associated Press reported.
Four-term Johnson, first elected in 2016, gained national prominence within the GOP after his fellow members of Congress elected him last year to replace former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy.
Prior to this, Johnson held the role of vice chair of the House GOP conference.
On Tuesday, Johnson secured victory in his strongly Republican district, where Democrats did not field a candidate. His only challenger was Republican substitute teacher Joshua Morott, who had minimal political experience.
Johnson’s district, located in the northwest of Louisiana, includes Shreveport, the state’s third-largest city.
Even without significant opposition, Johnson remained a key figure in his party’s fundraising efforts this election cycle, raising over $19 million for his own campaign and $8 million for other GOP candidates, as reported by the Louisiana Illuminator.
Louisiana, meanwhile, has been involved in a redistricting dispute. Earlier this year, the state redrew its congressional map to add two Black majority districts. Legal challenges persist, questioning whether the new boundaries unfairly discriminate against certain voters.
