Speaker Mike Johnson Passes Resolution Supporting Israel

In his first act of leadership as Speaker of the House, Mike Johnson (R-LA) brought a resolution supporting Israel.

The resolution passed by a vote of 412-10.

Johnson said that the United States must guarantee that it is “standing with Israel as it defends itself against the barbaric war launched by Hamas and other terrorists.

Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee Michael McCaul (R-TX) said of the measure: “Now is the time to show the world the United States firmly stands with our friend and ally Israel in our condemnation of this heinous attack by Iran-backed terrorists. I expect this bipartisan resolution to be one of the first, if not the first, items considered on the floor once we elect a new speaker. And I expect it to receive overwhelming bipartisan support.”

Democratic member of the committee Gregory Meeks (D-NY) stated, “President [Joe] Biden has committed the United States fully to Israel’s self-defense. Israel is responding to the Hamas terror organization’s unprecedented attack. The bipartisan resolution will demonstrate this is one issue in which the U.S. House of Representatives is united, and I expect it to pass the House with broad bipartisan support.”

American Faith reported that a poll from CBS News/YouGov found the majority of Americans are against “sending weapons and supplies” to Israel amid its conflict with Hamas.

The poll found 52% of Americans said the U.S. should not “send weapons and supplies to Israel” versus 48% who said they should.

Meanwhile, a Harvard Harris poll found that a majority of Americans support backing Israel as its war with Hamas continues.
