Shooting Attack in Downtown Louisville Leaves Five Dead, Shooter Neutralized: Police

A shooting in downtown Louisville, Kentucky, near Slugger Field baseball stadium, has left five people dead, according to the city’s police department, according to a Reuters report.

The shooter has been “neutralized,” the police said in a statement, adding that it was unclear if the attacker was among the deceased.

Louisville Metro Police Department Deputy Chief Paul Humphrey told reporters officers who arrived on the scene “encountered active gunshots still being fired inside the location at that time,” The Associated Press reports.

“The shooter was confirmed to be dead on the scene,” Humphrey added. “We do not know exactly the circumstances of his death at this time.”

The FBI has responded to the scene and police warned the public to stay away from the area.

Eyewitnesses described seeing police activity near a bank in the downtown area.

“I was at the stoplight, and the first thing that I saw — there was a guy across the street at the intersection and he was lying down at the entrance to a hotel,” said one eyewitness.

In response to the shooting, Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear has announced that he will be traveling to the city.

The incident has shocked the city of 625,000 people and comes amid heightened tensions in the United States over gun violence.
