Democratic Senator Chris Murphy has sparked controversy by suggesting that Elon Musk is endorsing neo-Nazism in Germany, following Musk’s recent post on the X platform in support of the far-right political party Alternative for Germany (AfD). During an interview on CNN, Murphy reacted to Musk’s statement that only the AfD could “save Germany,” calling the party “essentially the neo-Nazi party in Germany.”
Murphy, referencing the AfD’s extremist reputation and the party’s past associations with Nazi ideology, expressed shock at Musk’s endorsement, especially given Musk’s influence. He labeled the AfD as a group aiming to rehabilitate the Nazi movement and criticized Musk for supporting an organization that, according to Murphy, advocates for harmful, exclusionary ideas.
When CNN’s Dana Bash asked what this endorsement might signify, Murphy responded by suggesting that Musk’s views often align with those of the President of the United States, warning that official U.S. support for such a party would be “catastrophic” for Germany, Europe, and the U.S.
Musk’s endorsement of the AfD has stirred backlash, with critics accusing Murphy of misrepresenting the party’s platform. Many view the AfD as a conservative political group advocating for nationalism, opposition to mass immigration, and a defense of traditional values rather than a revival of Nazi ideology.
This clash comes amid growing political tensions, especially as Europe grapples with issues surrounding immigration, national identity, and terrorism, such as the recent deadly attack in Magdeburg, Germany, carried out by an immigrant from Saudi Arabia.
