Sen. Hawley Probes Democratic Group Over LA Riots Support

Sen. Josh Hawley’s Probe took center stage Monday, as Missouri Republican launched an investigation into the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles (CHIRLA), accusing the group of “logistical support and financial resources” that fueled recent unrest in downtown L.A. Hawley, who chairs the Senate Crime and Counterterrorism subcommittee, emphasized that “bankrolling civil unrest is not protected speech,” warning CHIRLA that “failure to comply will result in additional action by this subcommittee, including potential referral for criminal investigation.”

Hawley cited “credible reporting” suggesting CHIRLA helped facilitate the protests, which began as demonstrations against federal ICE raids but devolved into violent clashes. By demanding records—from financial documents to donor lists—Hawley aims to ensure transparency and accountability. “Let me be clear: bankrolling civil unrest is not protected speech. It is aiding and abetting criminal conduct,” he said.

Critics have decried the probe as an attempt to intimidate civil rights groups and chill dissent. Yet Hawley’s supporters argue that when peaceful protest turns violent, leaders of involved organizations must be held responsible. The senator noted, “These demonstrations have escalated into lawless mob actions… They have obstructed federal law enforcement, endangered public safety, and disrupted the rule of law. This lawlessness is unacceptable. It must end.”

Many contend Hawley isn’t stifling free speech—he is defending communities and protecting the core values of democracy. Public safety advocates praise his efforts to distinguish between peaceful protest and mob-driven violence.

In light of recent unrest, Hawley’s call for accountability echoes the sentiment that protest leaders should safeguard both expression and order.
