Segway has issued a recall for approximately 220,000 Ninebot Max G30P and Max G30LP KickScooters in the United States, citing a defect in the folding mechanism that poses a fall risk to users. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced the recall following reports of the scooters’ handlebars or stems unexpectedly folding during use, leading to injuries.
As of March 20, Segway received 68 reports of folding mechanism failures. These incidents have resulted in 20 injuries, including abrasions, bruises, lacerations, and broken bones.
The recall encompasses all Ninebot Max G30P and Max G30LP KickScooters. The Max G30LP is gray with yellow accents, while the Max G30P is black with yellow accents. Both models feature the “ninebot” brand name on the foot platform and handlebars.
These scooters were sold at major retailers, including Best Buy, Costco, Walmart, Target, and Sam’s Club, as well as online through Segway.com and Amazon.com, from January 2020 to February 2025, with prices ranging between $600 and $1,000.
Owners of the affected scooters are advised to immediately discontinue use and contact Segway for a free maintenance kit. This kit includes tools and instructions for inspecting and adjusting the folding mechanism to ensure proper functionality. Segway emphasizes the importance of regular maintenance, stating that, over time and depending on riding conditions, the folding mechanism may require periodic checks and tightening.
