Italian-Egyptian Belly Dancer Arrested for “seductive techniques” in Cairo

Italian-Egyptian belly dancer Sohila Tarek Hassan Haggag made headlines when Egyptian authorities arrested her at Cairo International Airport on June 22 for allegedly using seductive techniques—the exact phrasing investigators cited. The dancer, known professionally as Linda Martino, is accused of corrupting public morals through “provocative dances to incite vice,” according to the Telegraph.

The story stunned liberal audiences: Haggag, a naturalized Italian and Egyptian citizen, drew attention for Instagram videos showcasing her dance routines and describing herself as “more than you can handle.” Prosecutors contend she “appeared in indecent clothing, deliberately exposing sensitive areas of the body, in blatant violation of social values.” During the arrest, they reportedly seized a “substantial” amount of money.

Her case marks the latest in Egypt’s moral crackdown under President Abdel Fattah al‑Sisi. The Telegraph noted that five other belly dancers have already faced jail time under similar charges. Haggag “moved back to Egypt several years ago, where she built her successful career,” the report adds—and was previously married to an Italian national. The Italian embassy is now pressing Cairo for her release.
