School Libraries Shut Down From Fear of Florida Law

Manatee County, Florida teachers closed school libraries out of fear that books may violate Florida’s pornography laws. Florida House Bill 1467 requires library materials to be selected by a “media specialist,” but many of the books are donated without a vetting process. The purpose of the law is to increase “transparency of elementary school library materials and reading lists—thereby eliminating inappropriate, indoctrinating and pornographic materials in libraries and classrooms.”
