A school district in Texas has severed its affiliation with an Islamic-themed athletic event after it donated to an organization considered a terrorist entity.
Grapevine-Coffeyville ISD ended its link to the Islamic Games, no longer allowing the organization to rent from Colleyville Heritage High School. The organization had ties to the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR), which has been labeled a terrorist organization by Governor Greg Abbott (R).
“On January 19, GCISD was made aware that an organization listed as a sponsor of the Islamic Games in North Texas has been declared a Terrorist Organization by the Governor of Texas,” Grapevine-Colleyville Independent School District spokeswoman Nicole Lyons told The Christian Post. “Thus, GCISD provided notice that it is severing the negotiations for the use of District properties for the 2026 Islamic Games.”
Salaudeen Nausrudeen, President of Islamic Games, said in an email to the Fort Worth Report that they are “deeply concerned that a sporting event for children is being targeted,” and said it is their “hope that better minds prevail.”
Prior to confirmation of the decision to cut the event, Keller Mayor Armin Mizani said in a statement, “I denounce the CAIR-sponsored event scheduled at Colleyville Heritage High School without board approval and trust that district leadership will rectify the situation. If Texas or the Governor designates a group as a terrorist organization, no public facility should host its events. As state representative, we will ensure legislation is strengthened to ban this statewide.”
Abbott designated CAIR as a terrorist entity in November, stating that it and the Muslim Brotherhood “have long made their goals clear: to forcibly impose Sharia law and establish Islam’s ‘mastership of the world.'”
