Royal Navy’s New Drones Were Secretly Sending Data to China

A whistleblower inside Britain’s military has exposed a startling security breach: advanced sea drones used by the Royal Navy contained hidden Chinese components that were transmitting data back to Beijing without anyone’s knowledge.

The revelation raises serious questions about supply chain security in Western defense systems, particularly given that the company behind the drones, UK-based Kraken Technology, also holds a $49 million contract with United States Special Operations Command.

According to a report from The Daily Telegraph, a military insider blew the whistle after discovering that Chinese components embedded in the K3 Scout drones were communicating with an Internet Protocol address inside China. The source didn’t mince words about the failure.

“This is major failure to check origins of components and we have lost confidence in the platform,” the whistleblower said.

The K3 Scout drones were acquired by the Royal Navy as part of a 12 million pound contract. The Navy describes these uncrewed surface vessels as capable of “surveillance, force protection and precision strikes.” In other words, these aren’t toys. They’re frontline military assets that Britain is counting on for its future defense.

The problematic components were reportedly installed inside a camera system fitted to the drones. Defense blog Navy Lookout notes the K3 features a “Night Navigator 3000 series” Electro-Optical/Infra-Red camera mounted prominently atop the craft’s superstructure. That camera assembly is manufactured by Canadian tech company Current Scientific Corporation, though it remains unclear whether this specific system was compromised or if another camera on the vessel was responsible for the data transmission.

Chris Parry, a former Royal Navy Admiral and Falklands War veteran who famously sank an Argentinian submarine in 1982, didn’t hold back in his assessment. He said that accidentally allowing internet-connected Chinese components into a Royal Navy vessel should result in a “major fine” for the supplier and a ban from competing for future contracts.

The Ministry of Defence moved quickly to contain the fallout but notably did not deny that the drones had been transmitting data to China. Instead, officials insisted nothing important was sent to Beijing.

“The first duty of government is national security, and we take the security of our equipment, networks and data extremely seriously,” the department stated. “A routine cyber-vulnerability assessment identified an issue affecting a Kraken Unmanned Surface Vessel sub-system used by the Royal Navy. A thorough investigation found no evidence of MoD data or systems being accessed, compromised or transmitted externally.”

Kraken Technology also issued a statement through a spokesman acknowledging that “some third-party, NDAA-compliant cameras had a small number of components originating from outside the UK.” The company claimed that after a full audit by both Kraken and the Royal Navy, they are “confident no sensitive information has ever been shared outside of intended channels.”

That assurance may ring hollow for many observers. The Royal Navy has made drone technology central to its vision for the future of defense. According to the Navy’s own statements, “uncrewed systems are no longer a future concept for the Royal Navy and Royal Marines; they have been delivering operational effect for the past four years and are in service today.”

The K3 specifically has “undergone thorough testing in UK waters,” and earlier this year the Navy trialed dropping the drone from the back of an aircraft to test rapid deployment in foreign waters.
