Republicans Won’t Write Ukraine a ‘Blank Check’ after November: House Minority Leader McCarthy

Lawmaker says United States issues need attention.

QUICK FACTS:
  • House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) says House Republicans won’t keep funneling unlimited amounts of money to Ukraine.
  • McCarthy said in a statement that the United States has its own issues that need attention when talking to journalists about a potentially Republican-controlled House of Representatives.
  • “I think people are gonna be sitting in a recession, and they’re not going to write a blank check to Ukraine,” the Minority Leader said. “They just won’t do it.”
  • McCarthy said that while he believes Ukraine is important, taxpayers in the United States are dealing with important issues that deserve attention, such as record-breaking inflation and the border crisis.
ADDITIONAL AID SENT TO UKRAINE:
  • McCarthy’s comments come just days after the United States Department of Defense announced it will provide $725 million in additional security assistance to Ukraine in an effort to meet the country’s “critical security and defense needs.”
  • ”This authorization is the Biden Administration’s 23rd drawdown of equipment from DoD inventories for Ukraine since August 2021. The United States has delivered unprecedented security assistance to Ukraine and will continue to work with allies and partners to ensure Ukraine has the support it needs,” said an Oct. 14 DoD press release.
BACKGROUND:
  • Ukraine recently faced the potential loss of some of its support as Elon Musk said SpaceX can’t indefinitely fund internet use in Ukraine, American Faith previously reported.
  • The company founder said in a tweet Friday that “SpaceX is not asking to recoup past expenses, but also cannot fund the existing system indefinitely *and* send several thousand more terminals that have data usage up to 100X greater than typical households. This is unreasonable.”
