Republicans Pushing to Impeach DHS Secretary Over Growing Border Crisis

House Republicans are reportedly plotting the impeachment of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.

The Republican Study Committee, the largest House GOP caucus, is pushing for the impeachment of Mayorkas and even “laying the groundwork” for taking such action against him, Axios reported.

The problem? Mayorkas has failed to properly address the border crisis.

In fact, 133 caucus members sent Mayorkas a letter on Monday addressing his “actions to dismantle the security of our nation’s southern border and disregard for the enforcement of U.S. immigration laws.”

“Your actions have willingly endangered American citizens, undermined the rule of law and our nation’s sovereignty,” the lawmakers said. “Your failure to secure the border and enforce the laws passed by Congress raise grave questions about your suitability for office.”

Specifically, the Republican lawmakers raised concerns over:

  • Mayorkas allegedly failing to comply with multiple court orders directing Homeland Security to administer Migrant Protection Protocols (otherwise known as the “Remain in Mexico” policy) in good faith;
  • Mayorkas having “willingly ignored laws passed by Congress requiring construction of physical barriers along the southern border”;
  • The impending end of Title 42.

“Ultimately, you have a constitutional obligation to use all means available to protect our nation’s borders,” the lawmakers said. “Current law requires you to maintain operational control of the southern border and detain illegal aliens. You continue to fail to do so. This raises significant questions about your commitment to securing our Homeland and the oath you took when taking office.”

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), who is likely to become House Speaker if Republicans retake control of the House after 2022, even publicly floated impeaching Mayorkas this week.

“This is his moment in time to do his job. But at any time if someone is derelict in their job, there is always the option of impeaching somebody,” McCarthy said on Monday.

While Homeland Security is publicly supporting President Joe Biden’s decision to lift Title 42, privately Mayorkas is voicing concerns.

Title 42 was slated to be lifted on May 23, but a federal judge has stepped in to prevent the policy from ending — at least from now. The Biden administration is expected to comply.

Unfortunately, if Title 42 is rescinded, immigration officials have said as many as 18,000 migrants could cross the border per day.
