A GOP candidate is shattering records in a Senate campaign in the typically deep-blue state of New Mexico.
Nella Domenici, reportedly raised nearly $2.9 million during the April-June second quarter of 2024 fundraising, which her campaign said was “the largest fundraising quarter of any U.S. Senate candidate in New Mexico political history.”
The last Republican politician to win in the state was Senator Pete Domenici, Nella’s father, who was re-elected in 2002 to a sixth six-year term.
“The momentum is growing, the movement is building, and our state is ready for new leadership,” Domenici said in a statement. “New Mexico is at a tipping point and I’m grateful to all of those who are rallying behind our campaign to demand more for our state and our nation.”
The Republican has decades of experience in the finance industry at Bridgewater Associates, where she served as chief financial officer, Credit Suisse and Citadel Investment group.
In September 2023, Republicans in New Mexico created a plan to impeach the current governor of the state, Democrat Michelle Lujan Grisham.
State Representatives John Block and Stefani Lord introduced the idea of impeachment after Governor Grisham introduced an unconstitutional gun ban for 30 days in Albuquerque and the surrounding Bernalillo County.
“The U.S. Constitution is absolute and designed to protect the rights of the people against tyrannical decisions like Governor Lujan attempted to do,” Lord said in a statement.
The representatives also launched ImpeachMLG.com, a website with options for people to sign a petition calling on Grisham to resign, encouraging Democratic members to sign on and offer financial support.
“We must nip this governor’s lawlessness in the bud, which is why we have led the charge since day one to see the governor impeached. We mustn’t fail in this effort, or else every petty tyrant across the land will use Lujan Grisham’s illegal actions as precedent to seize more power by trampling on Americans’ rights,” Block said.
