Republican Leaders Sign Letter Supporting 20 House Members Opposing McCarthy for Speaker

Several well-known conservatives, including former Attorney General Edwin Meese III and Liberty Consulting President Ginni Thomas, have signed a letter expressing support for the 20 House Republicans who are standing in the way of Representative Kevin McCarthy’s (R-CA) bid for the speakership.

The letter, written by the Conservative Action Project, claims that Rep. McCarthy “has publicly and through proxies leveled attacks against members of his own party, including threatening to deny committee assignments for those who continue to oppose him,” according to The Daily Caller.

It goes on to say that McCarthy has failed to unite the party and should therefore not be considered for the speakership.

Jim DeMint, Chairman of the Conservative Partnership Institute and former Senator, stated that it was time to “fix a broken Congress” and that the Republican leadership needs to “start working with conservatives instead of trying to silence them.”

The letter calls on more Republicans to join the 20 members opposing McCarthy and the House “leadership,” arguing that Congress can no longer prioritize “K street lobbyists” over voters.

The American Principles Project President, Terry Schilling, who also signed the letter, blamed Republicans for their history of inaction and claimed that the GOP was responsible for the rise of the “anti-American agenda.”

McCarthy did not respond to a request for comment.
