Rep. Michael McCaul Describes Pelosi’s Fall That Led to Hip Surgery

Republican Texas Rep. Michael McCaul shared new details on Tuesday about the fall that led to former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s broken hip. McCaul, who witnessed the incident in Luxembourg, explained that Pelosi, 84, lost her balance on a marble step while wearing high heels, causing her to fall and sustain the injury.

“I was right next to her,” McCaul said. “She likes to wear high heels, very high.” He described how Pelosi lost her footing on a marble staircase that lacked a railing and fell to the ground. McCaul quickly assisted her, and they took a photo together shortly after, with him helping her up by the hand. Soon after, a vehicle arrived to transport her to the hospital. Pelosi underwent successful hip replacement surgery in Ramstein, Germany, and is now in recovery, according to McCaul.

Pelosi was in Luxembourg as part of a bipartisan delegation marking the 80th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge. Her hospitalization followed a similar fall by Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell on Dec. 10, which resulted in a sprained wrist and facial injuries.

Despite her recovery, Pelosi’s fall and injury come after she notably commented that President-elect Donald Trump, at 78 years old, is too old to serve as president. Pelosi expressed concerns about Trump’s mental fitness in a November MSNBC interview, stating that she doubted he could endure a full four years in office.
