Rep. Gaetz Introduces Bill to End Military and Financial Aid to Ukraine, Urges Peace

Congressman Matt Gaetz of Florida (R) is leading a resolution in the House of Representatives that aims to put an end to the US military and financial aid to Ukraine while also urging all parties to reach a peace agreement.

The resolution, referred to as the “Ukraine Fatigue Resolution,” has 10 co-sponsors and calls for the US to “end its military and financial aid to Ukraine and urges all combatants to reach a peace agreement.”

Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the US has been the main contributor to the Ukrainian war effort, with over $110 billion spent on financial, military, and humanitarian aid to the US ally.

This includes more than $27.4 billion in security assistance.

In January 2023, President Biden approved the release of 31 Abrams M1 tanks to Ukraine and there are reports of another $2 billion in aid being considered.

The resolution highlights the vast amount of equipment that the US has provided to Ukraine since the conflict began, including munitions that have “severely depleted United States stockpiles, weakening United States readiness in the event of conflict,” according to Pentagon officials.

The resolution also acknowledges that by providing aid, the US may be contributing to civilian casualties, with estimates suggesting that 40,000 civilians have died in the conflict so far.

President Biden has stated that the aid to Ukraine is about “freedom, freedom for Ukraine, freedom everywhere.”

However, the resolution introduced by Gaetz and his co-sponsors calls for an end to this aid and a push towards a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict.
