Red Sox Pitch Says Vax Should Be a ‘Personal Choice’

The Boston Red Sox will lose several players when they go up against the Toronto Blue Jays, due to Canada’s vaccine mandates.

QUICK FACTS:
  • Boston Red Sox pitcher Tanner Houck said he thinks vaccines should be a “persona choice,” in a comment to the Boston Globe.
  • According to a report by The National File, the Red Sox will have multiple players inactive when they play against the Toronto Blue Jays due to vaccine mandates.
  • Currently, Canada requires at least two doses of an mRNA vaccine or one dose of Johnson and Johnson to enter the country.
  • The pitcher was reportedly disappointed that the vaccine mandate would cost him his ability to play in the game.
WHAT RED SOX PLAYERS AND STAFF ARE SAYING:
  • “I think it’s a personal choice for everyone whether they get it or not,” Houck told the Boston Globe before his club’s 8-1 win against the Twins. “So, that’s all I really got to say on it.”
  • “We knew it beforehand, so we’ll plan accordingly,” Red Sox manager Alex Cora said when asked about the vaccine mandate. Cora did not specify which players would be inactive for the Toronto series later, though he said there were “multiple.”
  • “I’m definitely bummed that I won’t be able to make that start,” Houck said according to CBS Sports. “But the starts that I am able to make, I plan on giving 100 percent for this team, if not more so. Anything I can do for this team to help them win, I’ll do it.”
BACKGROUND:
  • Houck was questioned by the Boston Globe about vaccine mandates as well as his vaccine status, which he opted to share.
  • The pitcher made two starts since the new season began, including a scoreless outing against the Minnesota Twins where he went 5⅔ innings.
