To fly domestically starting May 7, 2025, you’ll need a REAL ID, a passport, or an enhanced driver’s license (available in certain states).
Applying for a REAL ID is simple, but it’s best not to wait until the last minute. You can obtain one through your local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). Look for the star at the top of the card—it’s the sign of REAL ID compliance.
In addition to domestic air travel, a REAL ID will be required to access certain federal facilities.
The REAL ID Act was passed by Congress in 2005 following recommendations from the 9/11 Commission. It establishes stricter security standards for travel documents.
The deadline for compliance was extended in 2022 due to processing delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, but now is the time to ensure you’re ready.
