Protesters advocating for an end to what they describe as “Canada’s weapons trade with Israel” blocked access to the Deltaport container terminal in Metro Vancouver on Wednesday. The demonstration coincided with the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People.
Delta Police confirmed the disruption on social media, stating that officers were working to mitigate the protest’s impact. Authorities advised motorists to avoid the area as they addressed the situation.
The protesters, who identified themselves as students from the University of British Columbia (UBC) and other community members, issued a news release highlighting their demands. They criticized a Global Container Terminals executive who serves on UBC’s board, claiming ties to activities they oppose.
Images shared by the group showed trucks halted by a blockade of flag-waving demonstrators at the terminal.
This is not the first time such protests have targeted Deltaport. A similar demonstration in April caused significant disruption for several hours.
The terminal, a key hub for container shipping in British Columbia, is expected to experience delays as a result of the blockade. Authorities have not yet disclosed when full operations will resume.
