Pro-Hamas Agitator Mahmoud Khalil Slams U.S. as Supporting “Genocide” Upon Release

Palestinian activist and former Columbia University student Mahmoud Khalil was released on June 20, 2025, after 104 days in ICE custody in Louisiana. A federal judge ordered his release, finding no criminal charges, no flight risk, and deeming detention “highly unusual.” Khalil is a legal permanent resident.

Upon his return in Newark, Khalil declared the United States “is funding this genocide,” accusing both the U.S. government and Columbia University of supporting Israeli military action in Gaza—a stance echoed by Representative Alexandria Ocasio‑Cortez, who condemned his detention as a violation of free speech.

Khalil, speaking alongside his newborn and wife, emphasized his commitment to continue protesting in support of Palestinian causes. He also pledged to advocate for deported detainees and stated, “Whether you are a citizen, an immigrant…you’re not illegal,” emphasizing shared human dignity.

Judge Michael Farbiarz determined that Khalil’s detention under President Trump’s “pro-Hamas” immigration policy lacked legal grounds and likely violated his rights. The government has appealed this decision.
