A tragic early morning crash in North Philadelphia claimed the life of a bicyclist on Monday. The incident occurred around 2 a.m. on the 3800 block of Broad Street, where a man riding an electric bike was struck by a vehicle. Authorities have not yet released the victim’s identity, and the circumstances surrounding the collision remain under investigation.
California is set to launch a new program this year offering up to $2,000 toward the purchase of an electric bike for eligible residents.
The program seeks to expand “zero emissions transportation options in the state” thinking of “residents who need the boost the most.”
The California Air Resources Board claim the program is being launched in partnership with more than 20 community-based groups, which will conduct outreach and provide application assistance.
“Prioritizing equity and access is key as we work to achieve our zero-emissions goals, and this incentive program will support those efforts by helping e-bikes be part of the solution,” said CARB Executive Officer Steven Cliff.
The board says electric bikes are a “greener” alternative to vehicles, and for commuters, they promote exercise and allow for traveling longer distances than traditional bicycles.
“By using e-bikes, people can get around and meet everyday needs while improving air quality,” Cliff said.
According to consumer reports, prices for e-bikes range from about $600 to around $4,000.
CARB said a portion of the incentives are set aside for priority applicants, those who live in a disadvantaged or low-income community or have an annual household income at or below 225% FPL and recipients must also meet the income requirements, having an annual household income at or below 300% of the Federal Poverty Level (FPL).
