Pentagon Nears ‘Speed of Light’ Weapon That Could Change Warfare

The cost of shooting down a cheap enemy drone may soon drop from millions of dollars to mere pennies, as the U.S. Army closes in on a contract for a laser weapons system that could revolutionize how America defends itself on the battlefield.

Army acquisition executive Lt. Gen. Frank Lozano confirmed the service is negotiating with AeroVironment for the Enduring High Energy Laser, known as E-HEL. The system was recently tested at White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico, where Lozano said it showed “a lot of recent promise and capability.”

The math behind the push for laser weapons is staggering. Current defensive systems like the Patriot and THAAD missile interceptors cost a fortune to deploy against relatively inexpensive threats. Rep. Ted Lieu, a California Democrat, compared the current approach to “throwing Ferraris at frisbees.” Lasers, by contrast, may cost only a few dollars each time they fire. They require no ammunition, only maintenance, meaning operational costs drop to almost nothing once the system is installed.

The implications for American national security are profound. Laser weapons destroy targets at the speed of light, giving operators the ability to neutralize incoming enemy drones and missiles for almost immediate destruction. No waiting for a missile interceptor to close the distance. No complex trajectory calculations. Just point and fire.

The Army’s initial goal is to implement E-HEL in a defensive posture, freeing up millions of defense dollars currently spent on traditional kinetic weapons. It’s a smart strategy at a time when adversaries are flooding the skies with cheap, expendable drones designed to overwhelm expensive Western defense systems.

The military has chased this technology before. Past attempts included a 747-mounted “ray gun” and a Humvee-mounted laser designed to target roadside bombs. None delivered on the promise of low-cost effectiveness. But the current generation of laser weapons appears to be different.

The Army isn’t working alone. The Air Force has already implemented a compact laser weapon system as a defense against enemy drones. The Navy has been slowly integrating HELIOS, a high-energy laser with integrated optical-dazzler and surveillance, after years of testing.

America’s adversaries are watching closely and investing heavily. China has put considerable time and money into laser-based counter-drone weapons and other laser weapon systems, recognizing the strategic advantage such technology would provide.

The shift from traditional kinetic weapons to directed energy represents more than a technological upgrade. It’s a fundamental change in how wars will be fought. Ammunition stockpiles become less critical when your weapon runs on electricity. Supply lines become simpler. The calculus of attrition warfare shifts dramatically in favor of whoever masters this technology first.
