Pennsylvania Hospital Remains Closed to Visitors Following Deadly Shooting

A Pennsylvania hospital remains closed to visitors after a deadly shooting on Saturday. The attack left a police officer and the gunman dead, while several hospital staff members and officers were injured. The victims, including a doctor, a nurse, and a custodian, were reported to be in stable condition as UPMC Memorial Hospital in York remained closed to visitors.

Authorities say 49-year-old Diogenes Archangel-Ortiz entered the hospital’s intensive care unit armed with a pistol and carrying zip ties, taking staff members hostage before engaging in a deadly shootout with police. Officer Andrew Duarte of the West York Borough Police Department was fatally wounded in the exchange. Duarte, a law enforcement veteran, previously served with the Denver Police Department and was recognized for his commitment to public safety.

Two additional officers from local police departments were injured but are in stable condition. Another hospital staff member was injured in a fall during the chaos.

York County District Attorney Tim Barker revealed that Archangel-Ortiz had prior contact with the ICU earlier in the week due to a medical matter involving another individual. Authorities believe the attack was premeditated, targeting specific hospital workers.

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro ordered flags to be flown at half-staff in honor of Officer Duarte and praised the bravery of law enforcement. “Their willingness to run toward danger helped save the lives of others,” Shapiro stated.

UPMC Memorial remains under heightened security as hospital officials work toward restoring normal operations. “Families and visitors are vital to helping patients heal, and we are working toward making visitation possible again,” the hospital said in a statement.

This tragic shooting highlights a disturbing trend of violence in America’s hospitals, where healthcare workers now face growing threats. According to the CDC, healthcare workers experience more workplace violence-related injuries than any other profession.

While investigators continue to piece together the motive behind this horrific act, the incident serves as yet another reminder of the increasing dangers facing first responders and medical professionals on the front lines.
