The organization PEN America, long known for defending free speech and writers’ rights, initially condemned the cancellation of shows by Israeli comedian Guy Hochman. Venues in New York City and Los Angeles canceled Hochman’s appearances after protesters demanded he publicly denounce Israel’s actions in Gaza. PEN America’s Jan. 29 statement called such demands “a profound violation of free expression,” affirming that performers should not face ideological litmus tests to take the stage.
Hochman, a well-known Israeli comedian and entertainer who has performed for Israeli Defense Forces troops, faced protests linked to his public support for Israel during the Gaza conflict. However, on Feb. 3 PEN America withdrew its original statement and removed it from its website, saying it had “decided to withdraw this statement” while reaffirming its commitment to “open and respectful dialogue” in defending free expression. The group offered no detailed explanation for the reversal.
