Paxton HQ Arrest: Texas Election Day Security Scare Before Polls Close

An arrest unfolded just hours before polls closed on the first major primary night of the 2026 midterms in Texas outside campaign offices. A suspect was taken into custody outside GOP candidate and current Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton’s Dallas headquarters after a reported disturbance and the discovery of ammunition inside a vehicle. The incident added tension to an already high-stakes election night.

Dallas police responded around 5:15 p.m. to the 3000 block of Fairmount Street after receiving reports of a “suspicious individual.” Authorities said the suspect entered a vehicle that did not have license plates properly displayed and attempted to leave the area. Officers conducted a traffic stop and arrested the driver for traffic violations.

During a subsequent search of the vehicle, police found ammunition inside the car. Video from the scene shows officers placing ammo on the hood of a vehicle while conducting their search. The suspect was seen handcuffed at the scene. Authorities have not publicly announced additional charges related to the ammunition.

The arrest occurred as Texas voters cast ballots in contentious Republican primaries, including Paxton’s U.S. Senate race against Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, who has held the seat since 2002. Rep. Wesley Hunt, R-Texas, is also competing, with political observers anticipating a possible runoff.

Election day operations faced disruptions after calls from Democrats to extend voting hours. A judge ruled polls would remain open until 9:00 p.m., two hours later than scheduled. The Associated Press reported the extension followed logistical challenges after local Republican parties declined to hold joint primaries with Democrats.

The episode also comes days after officials began investigating a terror-related mass shooting outside an Austin bar, heightening concerns about political and public safety across the state.
