Americans Gained 2 Pounds a Month During Lockdowns

There’s no doubt that most of us packed on the pounds during the pandemic. With the second summer of COVID-19 approaching, many Americans want to slim down for bathing suit season after spending months cooped up at home binge eating and watching television.

According to The New York Times, a new study found that, on the average, adults gained nearly 2 pounds a month during a four-month observational period. Researchers used measurements from Bluetooth-connected smart scales to calculate their data.

The study was published Monday in JAMA Network Open and linked the weight gain to shelter-in-place or SIP orders issued by 45 out of 50 state governments to stem the tide of the COVID-19 pandemic during the early surge.

“The initial SIP coincided with an observed decrease in daily step counts, likely reflective of changes in physical activity and patterns of daily living, as well as concurrent self-reported increases in snacking and overeating,” wrote the researchers in their report.

Dr. Gregory Marcus, a cardiologist and electrophysiologist at the University of California San Francisco, says that the adults in the study gained more than a half a pound every 10 days which adds up to nearly two pounds monthly, according to the Times.

Marcus, the senior author of the research study, said that Americans who kept up their lockdown habits could have easily gained 20 pounds over the course of a year.

“We know that weight gain is a public health problem in the U.S. already, so anything making it worse is definitely concerning, and shelter-in-place orders are so ubiquitous that the sheer number of people affected by this makes it extremely relevant,” said Dr. Marcus.

The 269 study participants were asked to track their weight regularly using Bluetooth-connected smart scales from February 1 2020 to June 1, 2020, according to the PhillyVoice. While the researchers acknowledged that the study was small, they said it still had important implications for the American public.

Former CBP Commissioner: Biden Admin ‘Has Dismantled Everything’ for Political Gain

Former U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Commissioner Mark Morgan said that the Biden administration’s policies on the border are detrimental for the nation.

“This administration is absolutely—has dismantled everything, and everything that they’re doing is against the nation’s best interest, and I believe it’s for perceived political gain,” Morgan told Just the News.

Morgan then elaborated on unofficial illegal immigration numbers.

“I think within the last 10-11 days, they actually had a single-day encounter of over 6,000. Have you seen that officially? Has anyone in [the Department of Homeland Security] reported that? No. Six thousand! They’re averaging, now, anywhere between probably about 4,500 to 5,000 a day.”

“But here’s the truth, and here’s the stat they’re not presenting officially: 75 percent of the so-called unaccompanied minors are older teenagers—15, 16, 17 years of age,” Morgan told the outlet.

“They’re not being ripped from their parents. They’re making a tough decision on their own to leave simply because they want a better job in the United States.”

Morgan further noted that over 20,000 people have been released since January by mandate of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), and that three-quarters of those being labeled as unaccompanied miners are older teenagers.

Morgan then said that DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas wasn’t honest regarding the border’s security.

“So, and this is one of the most disgusting lies—lie—that came out of the mouth of the DHS Secretary when he said, ‘The southwest border is secure.’ … And the 63,000 men and women of CBP on the frontlines of our nation, on the southwest border, know that’s a lie,” Morgan said.

On Tuesday, 14 Republican congressmembers demanded an explanation over “troubling reports” that illegal immigrants are being released into the United States with no court dates.

Rep. Andy Biggs (R-Ariz.) said in a letter to Mayorkas that the senators are “seeking answers to recent troubling reports that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is releasing aliens who entered the country illegally without the aliens being given Notices to Appear (NTA.)”

“Despite your repeated claims that ‘the border is secure,’ these reports raise serious questions about DHS’s commitment to faithfully enforcing the law,” reads the letter, which was obtained by Fox News.

The outlet reported that during the weekend, migrants were being processed and released without NTA in the Rio Grande Valley sector.

Health of Children Receiving Virtual Learning Could Be Worsening: CDC

Children learning remotely or in a hybrid setting are more likely to experience worse emotional and mental health, as well as less movement, time spent with friends, and being outside than children who go to school, according to a recent study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

“Virtual instruction might present more risks than does in-person instruction related to child and parental mental and emotional health and some health-supporting behaviors,” the researchers said, adding that children “might need additional support to mitigate pandemic effects.”

Prior to the pandemic, over 8 million children between the ages of three and 17 suffered from a behavioral or mental health condition, according to the National Survey of Children’s Health (pdf). Anxiety, behavior disorder, and depression were the most common conditions.

The findings of the CDC study were based on a survey of 1,290 parents of children aged five to 12 who received either in-person instruction, online learning, or a combination of online and in-person instruction, and was conducted between Oct. 8 to Nov. 13, 2020.

Parents of children learning remotely were more likely to report worsening emotional or mental well-being of their kids (24.9 percent) than parents whose children received in-person learning at school (15.9 percent). But reports of anxiety and depression were similar in children in all three learning models, highlighting the importance that schools play in providing mental health services for children.

Researchers of a different study published in the Journal of School Health found that 35 percent of adolescents accessed mental health services “only in an educational setting,” based on data from a 2012 to 2015 National Survey on Drug Use and Health.

“Common reasons for accessing services in educational settings included problems with schools, friends, and family members,” the researchers said.

As for how much physical activity kids were getting, about 62 percent of the parents of remote learners said their children were less active than parents of children attending school every day (30.3 percent). In addition, parents of virtual learners told the CDC that their kids spent less time outside (58 percent) compared to 27.4 percent of kids receiving in-person instruction.

Parents also reported on their mental and emotional well-being, including concerns over difficulties in child care arrangements and job stability.

The researchers said that parents of online learners “more frequently reported their own emotional distress, difficulty sleeping, loss of work, concern about job stability, child care challenges, and conflict between working and providing child care than did parents whose children were receiving in-person instruction.”

In addition, parents of children receiving hybrid learning also “reported conflict between working and providing child care and loss of work more often than did parents of children receiving in-person instruction.”

Some of the limitations of the findings include the small sample size and response rate possibly impacting how applicable it is to the population as a whole, and the results not representing all children aged five to 12.

More schools across the country are having students return to five days a week of in-person learning, while still offering virtual learning for students who wish to continue with that model.

China’s Xiamen City Enlisting Help Of Locals In Crackdown Against Christian House Churches

(Christian Daily) Chinese authorities in Xiamen City are encouraging locals to closely monitor their communities and report what it calls “illegal religious activities” — gatherings of Christians who did not register to become part of China’s state-sanctioned churches.

Xiamen City authorities are counting on local residents to help them locate and punish members of Christian house churches and other individuals engaging in “illegal religious activities.” Xiamen’s Xunsiding Church pastor Yang Xibo said that the Siming District United Front Department (UFD) or Ethnic and Religious Affairs Bureau made the announcement through a notice sent to local district offices.

Trump Senior Adviser Releases News Everyone’s Been Hoping for: 45 Is Coming Back

Former President Donald Trump will be back on social media within the next three months — on his own platform, according to his senior adviser, Jason Miller.

“I do think that we’re going to see President Trump returning to social media in probably about two or three months here, with his own platform,” Miller told Fox News’ “MediaBuzz” on Sunday.

Miller said because Trump was repeatedly censored by Twitter during his presidency and then banned in January, he wants to have his own platform where he doesn’t have to answer to left-wing tech overlords.

“This is something that I think will be the hottest ticket in social media,” he said. “It’s going to completely redefine the game, and everybody is going to be waiting and watching to see what exactly President Trump does, but it will be his own platform.”

Trump has been banned from Twitter, Facebook, the Facebook-owned Instagram and the Google-owned YouTube.

Since leaving the White House, the former president has issued news releases to slam the Biden administration’s catastrophic border crisis and to share other opinions.

Interestingly, Miller said he believes Trump’s prepared statements have gotten considerably more media coverage than many of his tweets did.

That said, the real estate mogul used social media (specifically Twitter) as his primary mode of mass communication when he was in office.

To this end, Miller said Trump has been having “high-powered meetings” with tech executives to develop his own platform.

He couldn’t reveal any details but said several companies have approached the former president about launching his own social media platform.

“I can say that it will be big once he starts,” Miller said. “There have been a lot of high-powered meetings he’s been having at Mar-a-Lago with some teams of folks who have been coming in.”

“It’s not just one company that’s approached the president,” he said. “There have been numerous companies. But I think the president does know what direction that he wants to head here.

“This new platform is going to be big, and everyone wants him. He’s going to bring millions and millions, tens of millions of people to this new platform.”

Christian persecution: 200 Killed, 40,000 Displaced in DRC Since January

(Persecution.org) The UNHCR has reported an “alarming increase” in attacks by the terrorist group Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), in the Democratic Republic of the Congo since the start of this year.

The ADF insurgency has “killed nearly 200 people, injured dozens of others, and displaced an estimated 40,000 people in DRC’s Beni Territory in North Kivu province as well as nearby villages in Ituri province,” stated UNHCR spokesman Babar Baloch, “In less than three months, the ADF has allegedly raided 25 villages, set fire to dozens of houses and kidnapped over 70 people”. These attacks leave the villages and those living in them completely devastated. Despite these continued attacks, the government in DRC has been completely incapable of protecting their citizens in Eastern DRC. Rebel and Islamic Extremists groups have run rampant in this area for more than 2 decades.

ADF, an affiliate of ISIS, has the primary aim of creating an Islamic Caliphate in Central Africa. In order to achieve this, they often assault, kidnap and kill Christians.  While a large majority (85-90%) of DRC’s population is Christian, violence rooted in Islamic extremism continues to worsen, putting the country at number 40 on the 2021 Open Doors World Watch List for Christian persecution. “These predominantly Christian communities are attacked by an Islamic extremist group with a clear Islamic expansionist agenda,” Open Doors spokesperson Illia Djadi stated in reference to ADF.

Please continue to pray for the healing of those traumatized by violence in the DRC, and for the Lord to comfort those who are grieving the loss of loved ones. Please also pray for the Lord to strengthen government protection over its people and bring peace to the nation, and for the love of Jesus to redeem the souls of those who persecute the church.

Biden: ‘There’s Not A Single Thing A Man Can Do That A Woman Can’t Do As Well Or Better’

President Joe Biden claimed during a White House event on Wednesday that there is nothing that a man can do that a woman can’t do just as well or better.

Biden made the remarks in the South Court Auditorium at an event marking Equal Pay Day.

“There’s a lot to do, but together we can ensure that our daughters have all the same rights and opportunities as our sons,” Biden said. “And if we’re able to do this, it’ll be transformational for our nation. That’s the goal. That’s what this is all about. That’s what this team, all of you, are all about.”

“Let me make one more point. You know, I’ve told my daughters, granddaughters from the time they [were] old enough to understand what I was saying — and I mean it: There’s not a single thing a man can do that a woman can’t do as well or better,” Biden continued. “Not a single thing.”

Biden was widely mocked over the statement.

Ben Shapiro, host of The Daily Wire’s “The Ben Shapiro Show,” posted a screenshot of a headline from a news article that stated: “FC Dallas under-15 boys squad beat the U.S. Women’s National Team in a scrimmage.”

Australian political commentator Rita Panahi wrote: “Such patronising bulls**t. Women can do plenty of things better than men but there’s no denying biological reality that men are stronger & faster. How many women want this job?”

Fox News contributor Mollie Hemingway wrote: “What a preposterous and sad claim. Men and women are different in many ways, and that’s a beautiful and good thing!!”

Political commentator Allie Beth Stuckey wrote: “Maybe I’m weird, but I just don’t need this patronizing nonsense to feel great about being a woman. I’m so glad there are things men can do that I can’t. I’m also pretty thrilled that I can do things men can’t, like carrying and delivering babies. I don’t want to be like a man.”

Pakistani Christian man sentenced to death for blasphemy against Islam

A Pakistani court has sentenced a Christian man to death for sending “blasphemous” text messages to Muslim clerics, according to a report.

The Lahore High Court in Punjab province has revised the 2013 sentencing of the Christian man, Sajjad Masih, from life in prison to death, according to UCA News.

Masih, a Seventh-day Adventist, was accused of sending blasphemous text messages from a mobile phone to Muslim clerics and others in Gojra. The 2013 verdict included life imprisonment and a fine of 314,500 rupees, the equivalent of about $2,000.

Masih, a resident of Punjab’s Pakpattan district, was arrested in December 2011.

Police said Masih was engaged to a woman, Ruma Masih of Gojra town. But she contracted marriage with another Christian man in the United Kingdom. Masih is accused of using her SIM to send blasphemous messages to clerics as an act of revenge.

Gojra has been a religiously sensitive area since massive attacks on Christians were triggered by reports of Quran desecration. In 2009, there were a series of riots targeting Christians in Gojra that resulted in eight deaths, including four women and a child. Muslim radicals reportedly set fire to Christian homes in the area.

Police initially refrained from charging Masih under the blasphemy law but added the blasphemy charge to the complaint after pressure from Muslim clerics.

Section 295-C of Pakistan’s penal code permits the death penalty for those convicted of insulting Islam or its Prophet Muhammad. International advocates have long called on Pakistan to reform its penal code as it is often used to persecute religious minorities.

In 2015, Masih’s brother and nephew were reportedly attacked and threatened by a group of people who had not been identified.

Wisconsin Assembly Authorizes Investigation of 2020 Presidential Election

Biden won the state by 20,682, or 0.63% of the more than 3.2 million votes cast

The Wisconsin Assembly has passed a resolution authorizing an investigation into the 2020 presidential election that President Joe Biden won, but former President Donald Trump sued over, forcing the state into a recount.

In the end, Biden won by 20,682, or 0.63% of the more than 3.2 million votes cast.

The resolution, opposed by every Democrat, gives Republicans, who control the chamber, authority to issue subpoenas to compel testimony and gather documents, said Rep. Joe Sanfelippo, the vice-chairman of the Assembly elections and campaign committee.

Trump and his allies claim there was voter fraud and other irregularities in the state, but those claims were rejected by state and federal courts. The U.S. Supreme Court also refused to hear the case, and “no significant problems were found with the state’s voting machines after audits and recounts in both 2016 and in 2020,” The Associated Press reported.

“Republicans said they wanted to gather more evidence to see if laws were broken, but Democrats said they were trying to score political points, undermining the public’s faith in elections and insulting election clerks, poll workers and others who ran the election,” wrote the AP. “Earlier this month, Republicans raised new questions about how the election was administered in Green Bay. The Assembly elections committee held a hearing on those issues but did not invite any election officials accused of wrongdoing to testify. Green Bay Mayor Eric Genrich called it a ‘Stalinist show trial’ and defended his city’s handling of the election.”
