US officials warn of possible second Afghanistan attack amid evacuations
U.S. government and military officials are concerned about the possibility of a second terrorist attack in or around the Hamid Karzai International Airport, where troops are working to evacuate Americans and Afghan allies who would be in danger under the Taliban regime.
Pentagon spokesman John Kirby described “specific credible threats” against the U.S. forces stationed at the airport during Friday’s morning briefing, approximately 24 hours after an ISIS-K operative detonated a suicide vest killing more than a dozen U.S. soldiers, more than 100 people in all, and wounding countless others.
White House press secretary Jen Psaki said President Joe Biden’s national security team briefed the president and vice president on Friday morning about a possible second attack, which she characterized as a “likely” occurrence.
“They advised the President and Vice President that another terror attack in Kabul is likely, but that they are taking maximum force protection measures at the Kabul Airport,” she said in a statement.
“The threat is ongoing, and it is active … our troops are still in danger,” Psaki said during Friday’s press briefing, which occurred shortly after she shared the statement with the press.
CENTCOM Cmdr. Gen. Kenneth McKenzie also warned that the military “believe it is their desire to continue those attacks, and we expect those attacks to continue,” during Thursday’s Pentagon briefing. “If we can find out who is associated with this, we will go after them.”
Pentagon officials declined to answer questions about the specifics of the attack on Friday, though they amended previous reports noting that there was only one blast outside the airport on Thursday, which was followed up with other terrorists opening fire.
Biden vowed to hold those responsible for the attack accountable during his press conference on Thursday, saying, “To those who carried out this attack, as well as anyone who wishes America harm, know this: we will not forgive, we will not forget, we will hunt you down and make you pay.”
The U.S. commanders are working on plans to target ISIS-K, Psaki added in her statement, noting that, “The next few days of this mission will be the most dangerous period to date.”
Biden also reaffirmed his commitment to the Tuesday withdrawal date that he set months ago. With more than 110,000 people having been evacuated since the beginning of the month, there were concerns that others would not be able to make it out in time unless the deadline was extended, though the administration has said every American who wants to leave would be able to do so.
New York jail where Jeffrey Epstein was found dead to CLOSE amid reports of dire conditions & sloppy security
The New York federal jail where financier and sex offender Jeffrey Epstein was found dead in what was ruled a suicide has been ordered to shut down, for now, amid reports of numerous violations, including filthy conditions.
The Metropolitan Correctional Center (MCC) in New York City, which housed Epstein as well as several high-profile criminals such as Mexican drug lord Joaquin ‘El Chapo’ Guzman, will not accept any new inmates in the foreseeable future after the conditions there were found to be unsatisfactory.
The closure was ordered by the Bureau of Prisons weeks after Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco visited the facility for an assessment as reports about squalid conditions, understaffing, and a chronic lack of security piled up.
In a statement on Thursday, the Justice Department said the facility would be closed at least temporarily while authorities addressed the issues at MCC.
“As part of this effort, the Bureau of Prisons has assessed steps necessary to improve conditions at the Metropolitan Correctional Center (MCC) in New York City,” the DOJ said.
The facility was thrust into the spotlight after Epstein’s death on August 10, 2019. The disgraced financier, who was on suicide watch at the time, was found unresponsive in his cell, while the two guards who were supposed to check on him every half hour were found to have been sleeping on duty or browsing the internet.
While Epstein’s death was officially ruled a suicide, the circumstances surrounding it immediately gave rise to conspiracy theories, with critics of the official version pointing out that the financier was known to have rubbed shoulders with the rich and powerful, such as former US President Bill Clinton and the UK’s Prince Andrew. The phrase ‘Epstein didn’t kill himself’ was coined soon after, quickly becoming a recurrent trend on social media.
The guards at the center of the investigation into Epstein’s death were spared jail time after they struck a plea deal, admitting to falsifying prison records throughout their shifts, and were ordered to complete 100 hours of community service.
They were also ordered to cooperate with the investigation by the Justice Department’s inspector general into the circumstances of Epstein’s death. More than two years into the probe, the inspector general has yet to release a report.
Apart from the Epstein scandal, the infamous corrections facility has been under fire for failure to stop the spread of Covid-19 and provide urgent medical care to inmates. A report by Dr. Homer Venters, who inspected the jail in May 2020, found “signs of severe pest infection” in the jail, including in cells used to isolate Covid-19 patients.
“The presence of mice, rats and roaches throughout the facility indicates a basic disregard for sanitation and infection control that casts doubt on ability or commitment of the MCC to maintain a sanitary facility,” he wrote in the report.
Florida judge blocks DeSantis’ ban on school mask mandates
A Florida judge on Friday blocked Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis‘ executive order prohibiting mask mandates in schools, saying he overstepped his authority.
Leon County Circuit Judge John Cooper ruled in favor of a group of parents who filed a lawsuit against the governor, arguing his order is unconstitutional and puts their children’s safety at risk if there is a coronavirus outbreak at school.
The July 30 order imposes penalties on school districts that do not allow parents to opt their children out of a school mask mandate. Ten school districts, which educate slightly more than half of the 2.8 Florida public school students in the state, have defied his order.
The judge said during a virtual hearing that Mr. DeSantis‘ order “does not meet constitutional muster because such action exceeds the authority given to the defendants under the Parents Bill of Rights Law passed by the Florida legislature.”
Mr. DeSantis has said he plans to file an appeal if the judge ruled against him.
Chinese Authorities Barge Into Church Service, Arrest Dozens Including Children
Chinese authorities have raided a small in-person gathering of Early Rain Covenant Church members in Chenghua District in the Sichuan Province’s Chengdu. Someone had sent in a tip to local authorities, who proceeded to break apart the meeting and detain its attendees, which included children.
“On the morning of August 22, 2021, during Sunday worship at Early Rain Covenant Church in Chengdu, police illegally raided the Tashui Small Group as they were meeting offline in Chenghua District,” an August 21 update on the Facebook page of Pray for Early Rain Covenant Church read. “The police claimed to have received a call reporting an illegal gathering there.”
According to CBN News, the update also reported that Pastoral intern Dai Zhichao sought a police warrant from the Chinese authorities, who he said were “rough” and had ordered to see the people’s ID cards. In the commotion, Dai’s arm was scratched and his mobile phone was confiscated. However, the Chinese authorities allowed the attendees of the gathering to have lunch before they were taken away.
After the meal, Chinese authorities from the Chenghua District Mengzhuiwan Police Station arrested almost all the attendees at the small gathering of the Early Rain Covenant Church, which included over 10 children. Only an 80 year old woman, a blind man, and his wife and brother were not taken by the police.
An August 23 update from the Pray for Early Rain Covenant Church Facebook page revealed that Dai and his brother He Shan were placed in administrative detention for 14 days and are being fined 1,000 RMB or about $154.

Religious persecution of Christians in China remains rampant. According to persecution watchdog International Christian Concern (ICC), detainees were often being physically beaten and abused by Chinese authorities while under their custody.
Children were reportedly hit on the head if caught playing. The youth are banned from attending Christian religious activities in China. Instead, children aged 6 to 14 years old are required to join “Young Pioneers of China,” which is sponsored by the Communist Youth League. Here, they are being taught the communist state’s ideologies with the aim of preventing them from joining other religions and grow up to be detractors of the Chinese Communist Party.
“No one under the age of 18 is allowed in a church building, or they will face serious consequences,” China Aid President Bob Fu said of the “war against religious education for children. “In every school, children are not allowed to get any religious education or participate in religious activities.”
Chinese authorities continue to crack down on house churches that gather to pray or read the bible together. These gatherings are tagged by police as “illegal religious activities,” attendants of which are taken, detained, and often charged with crimes.
Gina Goh, ICC’s Regional Manager for Southeast Asia described it as a “worrying trend” as house churches continue to be subjected to “harassment” in the name of “law enforcement.” She also described how the “legally flawed Revised Regulations on Religious Affairs” has been used by Chinese authorities to crackdown on house churches and gatherings of religious minorities.
Pelosi Political Hit list Exposed: Huge Conservative Names, Lives Will Be Turned Upside Down
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s Jan. 6 commission is getting underway — and she wants communications from some very big conservative names.
In a letter to the archivist of the United States, Pelosi’s committee requested the National Archives and Records Administration to produce extensive communications from former President Donald Trump’s White House, including any communication involving the 2020 election from numerous conservative names.
“Among the voluminous requests, the committee is seeking 9 months’ worth of contacts between the Trump WH and this group of outsiders, including Enrique Tarrio, George Papadopoulos and Jack Posobiec,” Kyle Cheney of Politico tweeted.
Not all are outsiders, however. Vernon Jones, a former Democratic state representative from Georgia, is a Republican candidate for Georgia in 2022. Bernard Kerik, the former New York Police Department commissioner, was included, too. So was Republican pundit Gina Loudon.

Dozens of names are included in the request, which asks for “all documents and communications concerning the 2020 election” between April 1, 2020 and Jan. 20, 2021.
Also included are names like Infowars hosts Alex Jones and Owen Schroyer. Proud Boys head Enrique Tarrio is included on the list, as well.
Trump 2020 campaign adviser Katrina Pierson was included, too, as was former national security advisor Michael Flynn.
The NARA requests were fairly far-reaching, according to the Wednesday letter from Democratic Rep. Bennie Thompson of Mississippi, the Jan. 6 committee chairman. The requests were originally made March 25, Thompson said.
“Given the urgent nature of our request, we ask that you expedite your consultation and processing times pursuant to your authority,” Thompson wrote to U.S. archivist David Ferriero.
One of the requests, for instance, ask for all “photographs, videos, or other media, including any digital timestamps for such media, taken or recorded of Vice President Mike Pence or any individuals accompanying him, on January 6, 2021.”
For some liberals, however, the target list was a step in the right direction.
My money would be on Michael Flynn having contacted some seriously bad people, on multiple occasions. Hopefully this can start the desperately needed reckoning with the truth that never seems to come. https://t.co/W8XiGIpTXS

GOP Rep. Jim Banks of Indiana, however, hit on how dangerous this was:
Everyone should be paying attention to this. What Nancy Pelosi & Bennie Thompson are doing to spy on their political opponents is way worse than Watergate! https://t.co/WiBAfu2STt

Other Twitter users noted the danger:

Hold up. The “Jan 6 Committee” (lol) is asking for correspondence between the Trump White House and REPORTERS (many on this list).

This is a chilling power grab. Resist. https://t.co/jfOt5faSTn
All of this comes after Reuters reported last Friday that the FBI’s investigation of the Capitol incursion “has found scant evidence” there was any kind of mass organization on Jan. 6.
“Ninety to ninety-five percent of these are one-off cases,” a former senior law enforcement official knowledgeable with the investigation told Reuters.
“Then you have five percent, maybe, of these militia groups that were more closely organized. But there was no grand scheme with Roger Stone and Alex Jones and all of these people to storm the Capitol and take hostages.”
“FBI investigators did find that cells of protesters, including followers of the far-right Oath Keepers and Proud Boys groups, had aimed to break into the Capitol,” Reuters reported. “But they found no evidence that the groups had serious plans about what to do if they made it inside, the sources said.”
However, Pelosi’s political committee thinks it can find a conspiracy where law enforcement officials have found none. They’ll find nothing, either — but they’re going to target as many conservatives as they can while they’re at it and try to turn their lives upside down.
Vaccinated Australians To Be Granted New ‘Freedom’; Government Sanctioned ‘Hour Of Recreation’
“This is on top of the already-permitted hour of exercise”
In a chilling development, Australians in New South Wales, which includes the city of Sydney, are to be granted extra “freedom” if they are fully vaccinated, with residents allowed to “leave home for an hour of recreation on top of their exercise hour.”
Sometimes they don't come in the night. They come via Twitter and mass surveillance.. Jesus I sound like Alex Jones… https://t.co/RxiopswcnH

9 News in Australia reports that “Premier Gladys Berejiklian said the vaccination milestone of six million reached this week would allow for a small renewal in freedoms for residents with the jab.”
The report add that “From September 13, households living in the NSW government’s LGAs of concern will be allowed to spend an additional hour of recreation outdoors, as long as all adults in the household are fully vaccinated.”
It clarifies, “This is on top of the already-permitted hour of exercise, meaning households will be able to visit a park.”
Watch:
Australia has faced some of the most draconian lockdown rules on the planet. The military has been called in to enforce the restrictions and curfews, with critics comparing it to North Korea.
Lockdowns have been instituted multiple times in several regions after just one case of COVID has been registered, and scenes of residents, including children, being hounded by the authorities have become commonplace.
Any Australians caught expressing anti-lockdown sentiments face massive fines, with government ministers telling people not to talk to each other, and declaring that what unvaccinated people are allowed to do in the community “will need to be controlled and restricted” by authorities.
Ashli Babbitt’s Husband Appears on Tucker Carlson to Respond to MSNBC Interview With Her Killer
Ashli Babbitt’s husband Aaron appeared on Tucker Carlson Tonight on Thursday and responded to the MSNBC interview with his wife’s killer.
Lt. Michael Byrd broke his silence and confirmed his identity with an on-camera interview with MSNBC earlier in the evening. The Capitol Police previously refused to confirm the shooter’s name, even though it was reported all over the right-wing media, including by the Gateway Pundit.
During his MSNBC appearance, Byrd said that he saved “countless lives” by killing Babbitt, who was unarmed. He also complained that he has been getting death threats since killing the Air Force veteran. The officer said that it was “disheartening” and that he was simply “doing my job.”
In an exclusive interview with @LesterHoltNBC, Capitol Police Lieutenant Michael Byrd describes why he’s choosing to identify himself. Byrd shares his account of the January 6 riot, as officers barricaded the door and he fired a single shot, killing Ashli Babbitt. pic.twitter.com/5E7KPtxNc2

Babbitt’s husband did not hold back in his response, saying that the officer needs to “suck it up.”
“I don’t even want to hear him talk about how he’s getting death threats and he’s scared,” Aaron Babbitt said. “I’ve been getting death threats since Jan. 7 — two, three, five, 10 a day — and all I did on Jan. 6 was become a widower. So, you’re going to have to suck it up, bud, and take it.”

— The Columbia Bugle 🇺🇸 (@ColumbiaBugle) August 27, 2021
Tucker Carlson also noted that Byrd is the same officer who previously left his loaded weapon in a bathroom at the Capitol building in 2019.
Byrd claimed that Babbitt was a threat, which Carlson was quick to call out.
“She was 5’2, she was unarmed, there were armed police in tactical gear standing right next to her on the other side of the door,” Carlson noted. “She was not warned, the tape shows that — she was just executed. But she was a threat, that’s what he’s telling you.”
Carlson mocked Byrd for pretending that he’s the “real victim” in the situation.
Babbitt’s husband said that he was “pissed off” and his “agitation level” was through the roof hearing the officer say that he did not care if she was armed or not. He also said that Representatives Paul Gosar, Louie Gohmert, and Marjorie Taylor Greene are the only lawmakers that have been in contact with the family.
Investigations by the Capitol Police and the Justice Department cleared the officer of any wrongdoing.
“The investigation revealed no evidence to establish that, at the time the officer fired a single shot at Ms. Babbitt, the officer did not reasonably believe that it was necessary to do so in self-defense or in defense of the Members of Congress and others evacuating the House Chamber,” federal prosecutors said in a statement.
Former President Donald Trump has repeatedly stated that Babbitt was murdered.
U.S. Economic Confidence Dips as More Say Economy Worsening
STORY HIGHLIGHTS
- Economic Confidence Index slips to -12, from -6 in July and +2 in April
- Ratings of current economy stable; more see economy getting worse in future
(Gallup) Gallup’s Economic Confidence Index dropped to -12 from -6 in July and is now back to the level it was at in February. The index remains better than its pandemic low point of -33 in April 2020 but is still well below the +41 Gallup measured right before the pandemic took hold.

Line graph. Recent trend in Gallup’s Economic Confidence Index. The index summarizes Americans’ ratings of current economic conditions and their views of whether the economy is getting better or worse. It has a theoretical range of -100 to +100. The index was consistently positive in 2019 and early 2020, ranging from +16 to +32. It fell to -33 in late April 2020 and has mostly recovered since then, hitting positive territory at +2 in April 2021. Since then it has slid back to -12, the lowest since -13 in February 2021.
Gallup’s Economic Confidence Index summarizes Americans’ views of the economy, including their evaluation of current economic conditions and their perception of whether the economy is getting better or getting worse. It has a theoretical range of -100 to +100, the former occurring if all Americans rated economic conditions as poor and thought the economy was getting worse, and the latter if all Americans rated conditions as excellent or good and believed the economy was getting better.
The Aug. 2-17 survey finds Americans are less confident in the economy because they are more likely to perceive the economy is getting worse than they were in July. Their assessment of current economic conditions is statistically unchanged.
In the latest survey, 37% of U.S. adults say the economy is getting better and 60% say it is getting worse, yielding a net -23 score for the “economic outlook” component of the index. In July, 41% believed the economy was getting better and 54% worse, for a -13 economic outlook score.
In August, 28% of Americans rate current economic conditions as excellent or good, 42% as fair and 29% as poor. This results in a -1 score on the “current conditions” component of the index — based on the percentage of excellent and good ratings minus the percentage of poor ratings. Last month, the current conditions index score was +1 (28% excellent or good, 27% poor).

Line graph. Recent trends in Gallup’s Economic Confidence Index components. Both components have a theoretical range of -100 to +100. The current conditions component score is at -1 in August 2021. The economic outlook component score is currently at -23.
Economic confidence fell among Republicans and independents in August, but not among Democrats. Republicans’ ratings of both current conditions and economic outlook worsened, while independents only showed a decline in their economic outlook. Changes in Economic Confidence Ratings, by Political Party, July vs. August 2021
The decline in confidence appears likely tied to the recent increase in coronavirus infections. The August survey found the percentage of Americans naming COVID-19 as the most important problem facing the country doubling, and it is once again the top overall problem mentioned. Meanwhile, mentions of economic problems such as the economy in general, unemployment or inflation showed no meaningful change.
Bottom Line
The pandemic has brought a number of shocks to the U.S. economy. The recovery from widespread business shutdowns in the spring of 2020 has been solid at times and uneven at others. Currently, the economic growth as measured by gross domestic product is healthy, the unemployment rate is decreasing and stock values are at record levels.
At the same time, the U.S. is still well short of the number of jobs it had before the pandemic, and employers are struggling to fill the openings they do have. The latest events in the pandemic may be dampening Americans’ economic optimism if they assume rising infections will cause consumer and hiring activity to slow, as occurred last spring.
