Over 3,500 Minors Underwent Transgender Surgery Between 2016 and 2020

A study from the Journal of the American Medical Association estimated that 48,019 Americans underwent transgender surgeries between 2016 and 2020.

Over half of the patients were between 19 and 30 years old.

The study found that 3,678 of those having surgery were between the ages of 12 and 18.

About 3,215 of the minors had “breast/chest surgery” and 405 minors had “genital surgery.”

Another 350 minors had “other cosmetic procedures,” according to the study.

The age of the youngest individual having “genital surgery” is unknown.

The study concluded that the “performance of GAS [gender-affirming surgery] has increased substantially in the US.”

“The rapid rise in the performance of GAS suggests that there will be a greater need for clinicians knowledgeable in the care of transgender individuals and with the requisite expertise to perform GAS procedures,” the study stated, calling for greater “gender-affirming” care.

Reporting from The Daily Signal:

Pro-transgender organizations like the Endocrine Society and the World Professional Association for Transgender Health do not recommend genital surgeries for those under the age of majority, and hospitals claim that they do not perform such surgeries on minors, but this data suggests otherwise.

Earlier this year, the head of a facility that carries out such surgeries published a study finding that “the level of life satisfaction in transgender people was not increased in transgender people who had undergone gender-affirming surgery, as compared to those who were unoperated.” German experts in Hamburg published that study in May in the peer-reviewed journal BMC Public Health.
