Big Beautiful Bill Faces Conservative Revolt Over Senate Changes

House conservatives are pushing back against Senate changes to President Trump’s ‘One Big Beautiful Bill,’ raising alarms over spending increases and rollbacks on conservative reforms. “There’s real problems with it,” Rep. Ralph Norman said. “We’re on board with the president… but we’re concerned about the changes.”

At the heart of the dispute is the Senate’s decision to preserve Biden-era green energy tax credits, which the House Freedom Caucus dubbed the “Green New Scam.” The Senate also proposes a $5 trillion debt limit increase—$1 trillion more than the House version.

Rep. Andy Harris warned, “The currently proposed Senate version… weakens key House priorities… and greatly increases the deficit.” He vowed to vote “NO” if the bill returns unchanged, rejecting his earlier “present” vote meant to keep Trump’s agenda moving.

Rep. Chip Roy said the Senate’s version is “weaker” and “unacceptable,” adding, “It would be a mistake… I would not vote for it as is.” Reps. Eric Burlison and Mark Harris echoed similar warnings.

President Trump ordered lawmakers to stay in D.C. until a deal is passed. “NO ONE GOES ON VACATION UNTIL IT’S DONE,” he posted.

Meanwhile, Senate Republicans face their own challenges, as reconciliation rules scrub cost-saving provisions. Sen. John Kennedy reminded fellow Republicans, “Don’t impose the largest tax increase in history… Follow your heart. Take your brain with you.”

With both chambers under pressure, the stakes for Trump’s legislative agenda remain high. As Sen. Kevin Cramer put it, “Everybody’s got to thump their chest… but in the end, it’s about getting the job done.”
