The organizing committee for the Paris 2024 Olympics has apologized to Christians over the opening ceremony performance that mocked Jesus’ last supper scene using transgenders.
“Clearly there was never an intention to show disrespect to any religious group. [The opening ceremony] tried to celebrate community tolerance,” the Paris 2024 spokesperson Anne Descamps said. “We believe this ambition was achieved. If people have taken any offence we are really sorry.”
The Catholic church in France said it deplored a ceremony that “included scenes of derision and mockery of Christianity”.
Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker criticized the opening ceremony, quoting scripture in his social media post.
“This is crazy,” Butker wrote on a post in his Instagram Stories.
“Be not deceived, God is not mocked.”
