Olympic Boxer Who Failed Gender Tests Wins Gold In Women’s Competition

A boxer who failed past gender eligibility tests won gold in the women’s welterweight final Olympic boxing match on Friday.

Imane Khelif of Algeria reportedly fought against China’s Yang Liu in the final round, and won every match.

Khelif never lost one round during the 2024 Olympics, and won every single judge’s card.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) allowed Khelif to compete in the women’s division despite failing gender tests in 2019 and 2023.

“As with previous Olympic boxing competitions, gender and age of the athletes are based on their passport,” IOC spokesman Mark Adams said.

Earlier this year, USA Boxing faced criticism after announcing it would allow transgender, biological males to compete against women.

Boxers under the age of 18 must still compete biologically, however, according to the Daily Mail.

In a new transgender policy, USA Boxing wrote that a male-to-female boxer is eligible to compete in the female category under certain conditions, including declaring their gender identity and completing gender surgery, taking quarterly hormone testing, and ensuring appropriate testosterone levels.”

While some sports have included transgender competitors, others have prohibited trans athletes.
