Former President Barack Obama will appear alongside Democrats Abigail Spanberger and Mikie Sherrill, seeking to boost their gubernatorial campaigns for Virginia and New Jersey.
Obama released two ads in support of Spanberger, claiming that the Democrat’s economic and abortion policies match voters’ desires. In one ad, Obama claims “Republican policies are raising costs on working families so billionaires can get massive tax cuts,” while he asserts in a separate ad that Democrats “know Republicans will keep attacking abortion rights and the rights of women.”
Similarly, Sherrill announced that Obama will join her on the campaign trail in November, The Hill reports.
“President Obama reminds us what we can accomplish when we leaders are unafraid to take on big challenges to deliver. He led historic efforts to insure millions of Americans and lower healthcare costs. The contrast couldn’t be clearer,” she said in a statement.
As with Spanberger, Obama appeared in an ad to support Sherrill. “Hey New Jersey. This is Barack Obama. And I want to talk to you about my friend, Mikie Sherrill,” he says in the ad. “Mikie is a mom who will drive down costs for New Jersey families. As a federal prosecutor, and former Navy helicopter pilot, she worked to keep our communities safe.”
Obama also made an ad on behalf of Governor Gavin Newsom, urging Californians to vote on a proposition that would likely eliminate several Republican-majority congressional districts. “California, the whole nation is counting on you. Democracy is on the ballot November 4. Republicans want to steal enough seats in Congress to rig the next election and wield unchecked power for two more years,” Obama said in the video. “With Prop 50, you can stop Republicans in their tracks. Prop 50 puts our elections back on a level playing field, which preserves Independent Redistricting over the long term, and lets the people decide. Return your ballot today. Vote yes on 50.”
