NYC Receives Largest Shipment of Immigrants from Texas

140 migrants unloaded in the Big Apple this week.

QUICK FACTS:
  • Busses containing 140 migrants arrived in New York City from Texas on Monday, making it the largest single-day arrival since the southern state began sending immigrants north.
  • Texas Gov. Greg Abbott began transporting migrants to more progressive states like New York and the District of Columbia months ago.
  • A spokesperson for New York City Mayor Eric Adams told CNN that three busses arrived at their port authority on Sunday morning, offloading a group of individuals that included around 10 children.
  • New York City officials provided the group with food, water, and clothing, and attorneys were reportedly on hand to offer advice about asylum.
  • The city then provided vans to shuttle migrants to hotels and shelters to stay in.
ABBOTT’S BUSSING PROGRAM:
  • “The busing mission is providing much-needed relief to our overwhelmed border communities,” Gov. Abbott said about the program to move migrants out of Texas.
  • Adams has accused Abbott of using migrants as pawns in a political battle with President Joe Biden. However, Abbott pushed back saying that the migrants have only gone voluntarily and signed consent waivers.
  • The Texas governor said he believes it’s important for other parts of the nation to understand what border states regularly deal with in taking in new arrivals.
BACKGROUND:
  • Abbott, a Republican who has been calling for stricter border security, began bussing migrants north in response to several more liberal governors and the mayor’s support of open borders.
  • An estimated 7,000 migrants have been sent to D.C. and almost 1,000 have been sent to New York City since April of this year.
