New York City Mayor Eric Adams’ budget office reportedly forecasts spending $4.75 billion in fiscal year 2025 to accommodate nearly 37,000 illegal immigrant households at an average cost of $352 per night.
The move is part of the city’s broader $111.62 billion budget.
Adams attributes the migrant influx to federal policies, while critics argue that the Biden administration’s handling of border security has exacerbated the crisis. The mayor is pushing for a pathway for these migrants to legally work in the U.S.
In July 2023, Adams was reportedly looking into the city’s school buildings to house illegal aliens last summer.
A list of around 20 to 30 school buildings that could house the illegals was compiled by the Office of Emergency Management with Adams’ office recently, according to the New York Post.
“As Mayor Adams has said repeatedly, we have more than 51,800 asylum-seekers in our care and have reached capacity,” a mayoral spokesperson told the Post at the time. “While this option is not ideal, none are, and we are in no position to take anything off the table.”
