North Korea Unveils Secret Nuclear Fuel Plan

North Korea on Thursday revealed a new facility for producing nuclear bomb fuel, with leader Kim Jong Un declaring his regime intends to expand its nuclear arsenal “at an exponential rate,” the Associated Press reports.

Kim visited the undisclosed site on Wednesday. North Korea’s official Korean Central News Agency reported that Kim and senior officials “confirmed the order of priority for implementing the ambitious future plan designed to beef up our state’s nuclear forces at an exponential rate.”

South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff assessed the facility as a uranium enrichment plant. Seoul said it is closely coordinating with the United States to monitor North Korean nuclear activities.

KCNA released photos showing Kim walking through narrow aisles lined with dense rows of silver tubes and pipes in what appeared to be a centrifuge hall. A separate image showed him speaking with officials in a meeting room, where a blurred graphic depicting a cone-shaped object was displayed across a table. It was not immediately clear whether the graphic represented a warhead design.

KCNA said the plant uses “more sophisticated technology” than previous facilities but did not disclose its location or provide technical specifications.

The announcement signals Kim has no intention of placing his nuclear program on any negotiating table. Analysts noted the public disclosure is designed in part to cement North Korea’s status as a nuclear power.

Some experts continue to question whether North Korea has fully functional intercontinental ballistic missiles capable of reaching the U.S. mainland. The new plant, if operational at scale, could expand Kim’s supply of weapons-grade fissile material significantly.

North Korea has conducted multiple nuclear tests and dozens of ballistic missile launches in recent years. The regime is subject to United Nations sanctions targeting its weapons programs, though enforcement gaps have allowed Pyongyang to continue development.
