A mother of eight from North Carolina became an international viral sensation after detaining a teenage pickpocket in Venice, Italy by grabbing her ponytail and refusing to let go. Christina Cadieu Greene, who was vacationing with her husband, held onto the suspect for nearly an hour until authorities arrived on the scene.
The confrontation began after Greene’s belongings—including her passport, credit cards, AirPods, cash, and a metal water bottle—were stolen in a crowded Venetian street. A group of girls surrounded the couple just before the theft occurred. Using Apple’s “Find My” app, Greene tracked the stolen AirPods to the suspected thieves and physically confronted one of the teens.
Greene grabbed the girl’s ponytail and held firm despite attempts to escape. During the encounter, the teen struck Greene in the head with the stolen bag containing the metal water bottle. Greene suffered a head gash, black eye, and required stitches for her injuries. Bystanders recorded the incident as the mother remained calm and determined, even while bleeding.
Italian authorities eventually arrived to take over the situation. Although some items were returned—such as Greene’s passport and credit cards—her AirPods and $200 in cash were not recovered. The suspect reportedly dropped off the stolen bag at a U.S. liaison office at the airport.
Greene, despite her injuries, praised the support of local Venetians, including nearby shopkeepers and her Airbnb host, who assisted her during the ordeal. She and her husband continued their trip as planned, boarding a Mediterranean cruise afterward.
The incident has drawn wide praise for Greene’s bravery and quick thinking.
