‘No Clinical Trial Showing That It Is a Safe Product’: Florida Surgeon General on New Vaccine

“There are a lot of red flags,” Florida Surgeon General Joseph Ladapo said.

QUICK FACTS:
  • Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) and the state Surgeon General Joseph Ladapo spoke at a news conference to address the recent reported resurgence of COVID-19 and the new vaccine.
  • The conference was held Wednesday in Jacksonville, Florida at an Irish pub.
  • “There’s a new mRNA COVID vaccine and there’s essentially no evidence for it,” Ladapo said. “There’s been no clinical trial done in human beings showing that it benefits people. There’s been no clinical trial showing that it is a safe product for people.”
  • “Not only that, but there are a lot of red flags,” he added. “There are multiple studies now from around the world–Brazil, Australia, the United States–that show that over time, these mRNA COVID-19 products actually increase your chances of contracting COVID-19.”
  • “That’s not normal.”
  • Last year, Ladapo recommended against COVID-19 vaccinations for children, contradicting federal authorities.
DESANTIS ON COVID-19 RESURGENCE:
  • During the conference, DeSantis criticized the efforts to bring back COVID-19 mandates and restrictions.
  • “People are lurching toward this insanity again,” DeSantis said. “As we see these things being orchestrated … there needs to be pushback.”
  • The governor said the state of Florida would not be closing schools or instituting mask mandates.
BACKGROUND:
  • Moderna’s updated COVID vaccine “may not protect all vaccine recipients.”
  • Coronavirus variant BA.2.86, also called “Pirola,” may be more capable of causing infection” not only “in people who previously had COVID-19” but also in those who “were vaccinated with previous vaccines,” according to Moderna.
  • The company warned in a press release “[p]ostmarketing data demonstrate increased risks of myocarditis and pericarditis, particularly within 7 days following the second primary series dose or first booster dose.”
