Governor Gavin Newsom (D-CA) responded to the Democratic Party’s process of selecting Vice President Kamala Harris as its presidential nominee.
Speaking to the hosts of the podcast, “Pod Save America,” Newsom said the party “went through a very open process, a very inclusive process. It was bottom-up, I don’t know if you know that. That’s what I’ve been told to say.”
One of the hosts laughed and said, “It was a blitz primary, I believe that’s what we called it,” while another host noted, “A very, very fast blitz.”
Newsom joked that there was a “30-minute convention.” The governor added that despite the unconventional process of selecting Harris, he believes the Democratic Party is “unified.”
“I mean, it’s next level,” he said.
Prior to Harris emerging as the Democratic presidential nominee, rumors circulated that Newsom would serve as a Biden replacement.
Newsom emphasized that he would “never” turn his back on Biden.
“I would never turn my back on President Biden. Never turn my back on President Biden. I don’t know a Democrat in my party that would do so. And especially after tonight, we have his back,” he told reporters. “We run, not the 90-yard dash. We are all in. We’re going to double down in the next few months. We’re going to win this election.”
