New Bill Proposes Half Staff for Holy Week Days

Rep. Andy Ogles (R-TN) has introduced legislation to lower the U.S. flag to half staff in honor of Holy Week, specifically Good Friday and Holy Saturday.

“Just as Christians recognize, fast, and reverently participate in the life of Christ during Holy Week, America’s institutions should reflect that same reverence,” Ogles wrote on X. “That is why I have introduced legislation to lower the US flag to half-staff on Good Friday and Holy Saturday. This would serve as a solemn reminder of Christ, who was crucified for our transgressions against a holy God. Christ is King of America, and we should honor Him accordingly.”

The bill amends the United States Code to “require the flag to be flown at half-staff on the first Friday and Saturday after the full Moon that occurs on or after the spring equinox.” It has been referred to the House Committee on the Judiciary.

Ogles’ effort comes ahead of Easter. The White House has taken similar measures to honor Easter, releasing a statement on the resurrection of Jesus, whose “triumph over sin and victory over death secured the promise of redemption and the hope of eternal life for all who believe in Him as Lord and Savior.”

The White House said that the “life of Jesus Christ and the truths of the Gospel have inspired our way of life and our national identity for 250 years,” going on to add that the “love of Christ has unfailingly guided our Nation through calm waters and dark storms.”
