Rapper Nelly has described his upcoming performance at President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration as “an honor” amid criticism. Scheduled to appear at the Liberty Ball, Nelly emphasized respect for the presidency and the importance of unity during a contentious interview with rapper Willie D. He cited his family’s military background as a reason for supporting those who serve the nation, regardless of political affiliations.
Nelly rejected allegations that Trump is a white supremacist, stating, “Show me where he’s a white supremacist.” He also pointed to Joe Biden’s controversial comment that African Americans voting for Trump “ain’t black” as evidence of racial insensitivity among Democrats. Nelly added, “Politics, for me, is over. He won! He’s the president… of what I would like to say is the best country in the world.”
When questioned about systemic racism and the Ku Klux Klan, Nelly highlighted the group’s Democratic origins. “The Klan was created by the Democrats,” he noted, pointing out the historical role of the Democratic Party in perpetuating racial discrimination during earlier decades. His remarks aligned with host Willie D’s acknowledgment of the Klan’s Democratic roots, underscoring the shift in political party platforms over time.
Country artists Carrie Underwood, Kid Rock, Billy Ray Cyrus, and Lee Greenwood will also perform at the event. Underwood expressed her pride in participating, calling it a moment to encourage unity. “I love our country and am honored to have been asked to sing at the inauguration,” she said. Her statement emphasized the need to come together and look toward the future.
The lineup reflects a diverse array of artists coming together in celebration of the democratic process and the peaceful transfer of power, signaling a call for unity across political divides.
