Multnomah County DA prosecutes protesters who engage in criminal acts, signaling a sharp departure from the policies of his predecessor, Mike Schmidt. Vasquez’s announcement came during a Wednesday press briefing following an anti-Trump protest in Portland that resulted in the arrests of five anarchist militants.
“If you break the law, I’m going to seek to hold you accountable. End of story,” Vasquez stated. The DA, a moderate Democrat, emphasized that his office will enforce the law impartially, regardless of political affiliation, to restore accountability in Portland.
This stance marks a significant shift from former DA Schmidt, who refused to prosecute more than 540 riot-related cases during the Black Lives Matter-Antifa riots of 2020. Schmidt’s policies shielded individuals arrested for offenses like rioting, disorderly conduct, and curfew violations. Vasquez criticized these policies, arguing they failed to serve the community or protect the integrity of lawful protest.
“When you allow criminal behavior, it detracts from people’s ability to exercise free speech,” Vasquez said, underscoring his intent to uphold law and order. He vowed to collaborate with local and state law enforcement agencies to ensure offenders face consequences.
The briefing, which also featured Portland Police Chief Bob Day, followed violent demonstrations tied to President Donald Trump’s second inauguration. On Tuesday night, Portland police arrested five individuals connected to Antifa for crimes including disorderly conduct, vandalism, and interfering with police. Earlier in the week, masked protesters targeted the ICE detention center in Portland, setting fires and clashing with federal officers. Another group vandalized the Multnomah County Elections Office, smashing windows and leaving anarchist graffiti.
Chief Day confirmed that police would continue monitoring demonstrations, with additional protests planned in the coming days. Vasquez reiterated his commitment to prosecuting criminal acts, emphasizing that unchecked lawlessness undermines the city and its residents.
