Multiple Democrats Resign Over Felony Corruption and Sex Charges

In the past six months, there have been a number of resignations over charges ranging from felony corruption to child sexual assault.

  • In Arizona, state Sen. Otoniel “Tony” Navarrete (D-Phoenix) resigned in August after he was arrested on multiple charges, including four charges of sexual conduct with a minor, NBC News reported.
  • December saw Erie County New York Democratic Party Chairman tender his resignation after he was jailed for allegedly sexually assaulting a child, according to Buffalo News.
  • In Delaware County, Pennsylvania state Rep. Margo Davidson was indicted by the state attorney general for requesting overnight reimbursements for time not spent representing Harrisburg as the forms indicated, CBS 3 Philly reported.
  • Additionally, Milwaukee an alderwoman was charged with embezzlement, Baltimore’s top prosecutor was indicted for lying on a mortgage application, and former state House Majority Leader Sheryl Williams Stapleton is facing up to 79 years in prison in New Mexico for racketeering charges.
BACKGROUND:
  • Nationally, House Democrats are seeing a flood of resignations from national postings with 26 House Democrats either leaving politics or moving to another position, according to the House Casualty List.
  • The same list shows that only 13 Republicans are retiring or seeking another office, with 4 of those 13 making Senate runs, one running for governor, one for state attorney general, and one attempting to capture the secretary of state title.
  • Seven of the 26 Democrats leaving the House are seeking other positions in state or federal office.
