Senator Adam Schiff (CA) is facing serious scrutiny after the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) referred him to the Department of Justice over possible mortgage fraud. In a letter dated May 2025, FHFA Director William Pulte alleged that Schiff repeatedly falsified documents to secure more favorable mortgage terms on a Maryland property, despite representing California in Congress.
“Mr. Adam B. Schiff has, in multiple instances, falsified bank documents and property records to acquire more favorable loan terms,” Pulte wrote. Fannie Mae’s financial crimes unit concluded Schiff engaged in “a sustained pattern of possible occupancy misrepresentation” across five loans. The Maryland home, purchased in 2003, was listed as his primary residence even as Schiff publicly claimed California residency.
Documents show Schiff reaffirmed the Maryland property as his primary residence multiple times between 2009 and 2013 while simultaneously claiming a homeowner’s tax exemption in California. “Schiff appears to have falsified records in order to receive favorable loan terms,” Pulte added, noting that primary residence mortgages carry significantly better rates.
President Donald Trump responded by demanding prosecution. “Mortgage Fraud is very serious, and CROOKED Adam Schiff (now a Senator) needs to be brought to justice,” Trump stated on Truth Social.
In a video statement, Schiff called the allegations “baseless,” adding, “It’s been basically one thing after another, all baseless, all without merit.” However, his actions—now under DOJ review—mirror those that previously led to criminal convictions for similar mortgage fraud.
