Major League Baseball (MLB) has asked the Trump administration about the possibility of holding a game in Wyoming’s Grand Teton National Park.
The Washington Post reported on the matter over the weekend. The White House said that the idea is neither “being driven by the Department of Interior,” nor is it a “White House or Administration priority.”
Chris Kassar, director of Wyoming’s Sierra Club, said of the idea, “Americans want to see protections for our national parks and public lands strengthened. Bulldozing these lands for a baseball stadium does the opposite, destroying the magnificent landscapes that millions of people come to experience.”
Mike Gierau, a Democratic state senator and baseball fan, told the Associated Press that the idea is “abhorrent.”
“Baseball is the American game. The national parks are America’s greatest idea,” he said. “But a national park is to be protected for its undeveloped and scenic values.”
The MLB came under fire earlier this year after condemning players writing Bible verses on Pride Night hats. MLB Chief Communications Officer Pat Courtney said, as per ESPN, “The writing on the cap violates our rules, and consistent with normal practice, we have warned the players about future violations.”
Giants player Landen Roupp wore “Gen 9:12-16” on his hat. He told reporters, “It’s just about God’s covenant and a promise that he makes to us that, you know, his faithfulness and his mercy. That’s just kind of something I believe in, and I stand firm in that, and I’m thankful we live in a country where, you know, we have the freedom to believe what we want, and express what we want.”
