Minnesota Walks Back on New Flag Design

After widespread backlash on Minnesota’s new state flag design the State Emblems Redesign Commission has chosen another option.

Critics of the flag claimed it resembled the Jubaland and Puntland flags of Somalia.

One of the state’s congressional representatives, Ilhan Omar (D), is from Somalia.

The new flag features an eight-pointed star on a dark blue panel.

To the right of the star is a light-blue panel.

“It’s official! I’m loving the new Minnesota state flag,” Omar tweeted,” sharing an image of the new flag. “And I hate to break it to the rightwing crazies, but I had nothing to do with the new design.”

Commission members also announced plans to change the Minnesota state seal.

The original seal featured an image similar to the former state flag, where a white farmer was plowing as a Native American rode a horse.

The new seal pictures a red-eyed loon on a lake.

A phrase above the new image says, “Mni Sóta Makoc̣e,” Dakota for the “land where the waters reflect the sky.”
