Florida’s Miami-Dade County Commission approved the city of Hialeah’s request to name a street after President-elect Donald Trump.
The city named the street “Donald J. Trump Avenue” last year and sought county recognition following the election.
“This board would also like to recognize President Trump and his accomplishments in office by approving the City of Hialeah’s co-designation of Palm Avenue as ‘President Donald J. Trump Avenue,'” the resolution read, according to Maimi New Times. “The United States thrived under President Trump’s leadership.”
Although the County Commission holds a Democrat majority, the board voted 9-1 to approve the city’s request to add Trump’s name to Palm Avenue.
The only person to vote against the request, Marleine Bastien, said, “I respect the fact that President Trump won the popular vote, the Electoral College and Miami-Dade County. However, his victory does not erase the collective trauma that immigrants and citizens alike felt during this election cycle.”
She explained that “falsehoods about Haitians eating cats and dogs in Ohio” and “derogatory comments about Haiti, Mexico, and some African countries in the past” caused her to vote against the renaming.
Upon receiving approval, Haileah can place “President Donald J. Trump Avenue” on county infrastructure, traffic lights, and roadways.
Commissioner Kevin Marino Cabrera, a Republican, wrote on X following the vote, “Today, we ratified the City of Hialeah’s initiative to honor President Trump’s legacy of championing freedom and opportunity by co-designating Palm Avenue—a vital artery in our community—as ‘President Donald J. Trump Avenue.'”
“Miami-Dade County strongly supported President Trump during the election, and this designation serves as a lasting tribute to his leadership and vision for our nation.”
